Mazes, Miracles, and Stagnation

Miracle of Miracles

He’s going down by himself now. Just like that! Overnight! (Literally.) I’m still in a state of shock that such a magical thing is possible for such an energetic little boy. By his own choice! Amazing. At any rate, I’ve noticed a decided improvement in my own mood in the evenings. Nights are earlier for me, more relaxed, just…blissful. Now let’s see how long this lasts… XD

Stagnant Reading

While writing (at least in ways) has been going well this week, my reading commitment has been awful. I’ve resorted to setting a timer for ten minutes every night just to make sure I sit down and make progress. I’m one of those people who read half a dozen (*cough* or a dozen *cough*) books at a time, and the ones I’ve had on hand recently just have not been attracting me to them. I started a non-fiction book to address some of the problems the cats have been having with each other lately, and also finally rented Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer on audiobook from our virtual library. It’s one I’ve been meaning to check out for a while, and so far I’m really enjoying it, so perhaps this’ll break the stale cycle!

Dead Ends and Writing Mazes

So I’ve pretty much scrapped the entire last half of the Draft 2–Summary Draft for Lunar Lots. I was way off the thematic mark, had awkwardly tucked away too many important characters, and it felt like a complete disconnect from the chapters preceding it. So–! I scrapped it. As much as it’s frustrating to go back to the proverbial drawing board, at the same time, I do feel a sense of relief. The blank space is better than what was there before, so I suppose that’s progress. I’ve been trying to think of this novel rewrite as writing my way through a maze. Sometimes you write to a point where everything stops and you realize: Oops. Dead end. But then you just backtrack to the last place you felt good about it, and try a new path. Sometimes that’s a dead end, too, or maybe it gets you a little closer to the center of the maze, but everything’s progress, even if only in determining which was doesn’t work. At least, that’s what I’m trying to do. ^_-
