THE ODDSCOPE MONTHLY ANALOG NEWSLETTER IS HERE!

Every month, I send out a FREE physical newsletter, ‘zine style, to subscribers in the United States. If you’re an international reader (Hi! And thanks for reading!) and would like to receive this newsletter, I’m happy to email a monthly photocopy!

Who is this newsletter for?

This is for anyone located in the United States who wants to keep up with my writing, where you can find it, and what to look forward to, in addition to updates regarding The Placebo Emporium and Oddities Shoppe, my Etsy shop of old-timey snake oil jars and labels, zines, and oddities I find.

Why are you doing a physical newsletter? Isn’t that, like, really 1990s of you?

That’s exactly why! I don’t know about you, but I’m getting so freaking sick of social media and AI slop and the exploitation of my attention, that I wanted to do something totally different. Something you can touch (and recycle! or keep!) that arrives in your mailbox with the junk mail, but is actually FUN. I love getting letters in the mail, and started a correspondence habit a few years ago with family and friends, and it has been such a source of joy in my life, I want to share that with you. So if you want to start getting mail again, REAL MAIL–not just advertisements for window treatments or gutter decluttering–from a REAL PERSON, who isn’t using any AI in their work, then this newsletter is for you!

What does this newsletter include?

  • A monthly update on what I’m writing/working on
  • Updates on what posts have gone up on the blog and any new sales/publication information
  • Recommendations of media (books, articles, music, movies, TV, zines) I’ve enjoyed
  • When The Placebo Emporium is back up and running, you’ll get exclusive updates on the shop, what’s coming up, or coupons!
  • Updates on any new zine projects and where those are at
  • Updates on what art I’m undertaking at the moment
  • A monthly “Girls in the Attic” or other comic strip
  • A monthly exclusive flash fiction story from yours truly!*

Do you use any AI in your writing or art?

NO! I’m a strong believer that art is something that comes from the soul, and at this point in time, AI are just regurgitating what’s already out there, and not in a way that interests me. Maybe someday, the robots will start writing literature about their experiences being a robot in a human world, and what that feels like, and maybe it’ll be in code or in binary, and I won’t understand it at all, but THAT would at least be more compelling, as it would reflect their own real lived experiences. (In fact, my very first published story, “Mechanical Difficulties,” was about just this subject.)

TL;DR: No. I prefer my art and writing perfectly imperfect and messily human, thanks. Otherwise, what the heck’s the point?! So all the dumb ideas and bad drawing is ALL ME. 100% Human Made by Inefficient Gray Matter.

I’m not in the United States, but I’d like to know what you’re up to, too!

No problem! I also offer a digital version of this newsletter for my much appreciated (and beloved!) international readers. Just let me know in your contact message, and I’ll add you to the email-specific list and you’ll receive a photocopy of the letter (front and back) each month, so you don’t miss a thing.

I’m in the United States, but I’d rather have a digital copy.

No worries, friend! Whether it’s to save trees, avoid the post office, or just because, you can subscribe in digital form, too! Just pop over to the other listing for the Digital Newsletter and follow along there. You’ll get the same newsletter photocopy of the front and back of the physical newsletter each month.

When does the newsletter go out?

Honestly, probably the last day of the month. For example, if it’s October, it’ll probably go out on Halloween, and you’ll likely receive it within the next week.

How long will it take to mail to me?

That’s kind of in the hands of the US Postal Service, but I utilize standard First Class Forever Stamps and plain old envelopes, so it should be pretty brisk. If I had to guess, based on shipping zines out to the West Coast (I’m in New England), it’ll take about 3-5 days after mailing.

Do I have to subscribe every month or year?

I’m trying to make this as easy for everybody as possible, so as far as I’m concerned, if you sign up to receive the newsletter, you’ll keep getting it (in physical or digital form) for as long as I’m producing it. No need to renew, though if you’re getting the physical newsletter and your address changes, please to reach out to me via the contact sheet or my email in the newsletter and let me know so I can update my records!

What if I want to switch from physical to digital (or vice versa)?

No problem! Just email me at the address in the newsletter or use the contact page on my website (maggieslater.com) to let me know which format you’d like, and I’ll get that swapped over for you.

I’m in! How to I sign up?!

Just write to me via the contact form above (or text me, if we’re that close–seriously, it’s not a big deal), and let me know! We can hammer out the details from there.

Also, no problem canceling if you need to! Just shoot me another message here and let me know, and I’ll take you off immediately, no questions asked. (Who doesn’t love an EASY un-subscribe?)

*Aside from October 2025–I did a photo-collage of all the cool things we did this month instead of a story, but there will be a flash story in November 2025’s issue!
