Day 42: Settling In

In Which Our Heroine Straightens Things at Home and Makes Plans

Project Title: The Mistress of Frosthaven
Genre: YA – Dark Fantasy
Words Today: 1,654
Running Total: 9,375
Scrap Draft: (V1.0 = 31,142), V2.0 = 5,119

Finally starting to feel like I’ve crawled into the skin of this story. (I know that’s an odd metaphor, but somehow I always feel like finding the right voice for a story is like wriggling into a new skin, kind of backwards molting.) Writing went smoothly tonight, incredibly smooth. I can feel the main character starting to tug at the story reigns, dictating more and more how she would do things, rather than how I might have originally foreseen, and I love that. The dynamic between the two main characters is so, so, SO much richer this time around, and I think it sets up what they’re willing to do to protect each other perfectly for what comes later. I’m definitely aware that I may need to tie in the fantasy element a bit more than is already present (there are a few mentions, but it probably needs to be much more central), but that’s a worry for a later draft. Feeling good about the story again, and about making up for lost words. If I break even this month with what I tossed out last month, that won’t be such a wretched thing.
