“Gluten Breath” – NOW OUT at The Core Review – Issue 2

Very excited to announce that you can now read my sentient bread story–“Gluten Breath”–is now available on The Core Review for free reading! (If you’re more of a paper-fan like me, you can also pick up a PRINT *gasp!* copy.)

“Gluten Breath” was a story that grew out of a single image of a little midwestern farm girl (like my grandmother or her sisters) with a clutch of doughy, undercooked bread buns bouncing around in a dresser drawer, while her father–a serious, German farmer-type–told her she had to let them go, because they wouldn’t survive without their mother. From there, I got hooked on this idea of wild, sentient bread, of people in days past hunting bread, of bread sanctuaries, and the inevitable decline of wild breads.

Combined with my own loathing of the current diet/wellness culture obsession with monitoring every calorie, vitamin, and nutrient one eats, and the moralistic tendency to judge foods as “bad” or “good” based on shifting criteria, it evolved into a story about breakups, toxic food relationships, diet culture, and re-wilding oneself.

This story is for you if:

  • You unabashedly love bread
  • You are sick and tired of diet culture hidden behind the guise of “wellness”
  • You like stories that combine realism and absurdity
  • You enjoy my dark sense of humor
  • You notice (and loathe) backhanded compliments
  • You’ve ever wanted to tell an ex what you *really* thought about them
