Release info for HOPE: The Thing with Feathers & Kaleidotrope!

Just popping in for a quick update! I just learned from Fred Coppersmith at Kaleidotrope that my flash horror story, “A Preparation of Tombstones,” will be coming out in their July issue! Very excited that this weird little story about grief has found such a fantastic home. (As a glimpse behind-the-scenes of what short fiction publication is like: I actually sold this story about a year ago.)

HOPE: The Thing with Feathers from Metaphorosis editor B. Morris Allen at Plant Based Press is up for pre-order, and will be releasing in August at WorldCon in Seattle this year! I’m thrilled, because I’ll be at WorldCon from Friday-Sunday, so if you’re attending or in the area and want to meet up, let me know! Hope includes my short story, “The Trash King,” about a girl stuck in a toxic friendship who finds an unexpected ally in a dumpster-diving guy with a seagull head. This story’s for you if you like realism with a magical twist, have always wanted to confront someone who’s taken you for granted, if you’ve ever considered yourself “the boring friend,” and if you’ve ever visited (or wanted to visit) the mundane side of Oahu college life (it’s set in Manoa on the UHawaii campus, based on my early college days).

Otherwise, summer is kicking off! Thing 2 is already on his break, and Thing 1 will be done next week. We’ll have some houseguests for a bit, and then hopefully settle into a leisurely summer routine of sleeping in, outdoor play, video games, and boredom (in the best way). Summer vacation is always a slow writing time for me, because I’m super distractible and having people shouting for snacks at unpredictable intervals tends to throw me into a maddening rage if I’m trying to focus on writing. So I don’t!

That said, I am going to try a repeat of summer 2023 in which I posted a flash fiction piece every Friday. I really enjoyed doing that, and it was great practice! So keep your eyes open for those each week. I’m looking forward to sharing those with you (and maybe turning a few of them into ‘zines to give out at Worldcon!).

Remember to have fun!
