Today in Mommyland…
Andy learned the hard way today that the whole idea of “get up before the kids to get work done” is a nonsense fallacy in our house, because the instant a parent gets up, B-Bug gets up, too, followed shortly by Goldbug (and therefore, myself). So all getting up early means is that EVERYBODY’S UP early! Ah well.
My lesson for the day, in fact, has to do with those cute little glass jar candles you can get for a buck at Walmart. My lesson? Don’t get them. As we prep to move, I’ve collected a little handful of these jar candles, most of which are nearly gone, with the intention of doing the Pinterest-y thing of boiling the jars in a bit of water on the stove to melt the remaining wax to dispose of, in order to recycle the glass like a good world citizen. Well, I can tell you that this is a TERRIBLE IDEA, which involves hot glass, clumsy oven mitts, and the nightmare of spilled melted wax ALL OVER THE SINK (thank goodness it was just the sink!), which proves nearly impossible to clean up without a Brillo pad and lots of hot water and soap, because wax is not only waxy, it’s apparently also SUPER GREASY which makes it very challenging to get off. Also, I hate our tiny, flat-bottomed sink that can’t hold half of a cookie sheet. That’s an ongoing battle.

It’s been just a very blah day, despite actually getting a fair amount of to-do list things done. I got B-Bug’s second homework project posted on his Google Classroom page, and got some writing done, ordered a new Leuchtturm 1917 notebook (in lemon yellow) and B-Bug’s b-day gift, sent the “virtual tour” videos, read a few stories from the beta reading project, and caught up with my sister on the phone. I don’t know if it’s the day (grey, cold, and rainy) or what, but the blahs are affecting everyone. Ah well. Maybe warmer weather will heat us all up. In the meantime, I got a chance to warm up a bit with a sleepy baby on the couch watching Harder Than Everest, which makes today’s wretched weather look like a summer day in California!
Today in Writerland…
So forgot to post a note yesterday until 10:30pm as I was getting Goldbug down to bed, but today was a little better. Managed to take some advantage of an early 9am nap, and got 500 words down in a rush, which is better than nothing. It’s a balancing act, deciding whether to write or get moving stuff done, because the moving stuff really does need to get done, and I ALSO can’t do much of it when Goldbug is awake. Sigh. I’ve also got the beta reading to get done in the next couple of weeks, which will be good, but DANG I’m getting stretched on time as May rolls in. I’m going to have to devote some extended time to reading in the next few days, which lately hasn’t happened much at all.
Plus, packing is forcing me make some tough choices about what work/notebooks to leave out or pack. The short story drafts have been packed; the Frosthaven box has been packed off for the time being; I’ve kept out the new novel WiP folder(s), my journal, my submissions notebook that tracks stories I’ve got out, all of my “currently reading” books, and one spiral-bound notebook in case I get a chance to write by hand. I still need to go through my art supplies and knitting/crocheting/sewing things and pack what I’m keeping, donate what I’m not, and hold out one or two things to have on hand while we’re figuring out where we’re settling. But I’m not doing that today!
